Meeting minutes for March 17, 2018
The club met at the home of Virginia. President Doug called the meeting to order at 1:06 p.m.
Members present were Chuck, Marv and JoAnn, Bob and Bev, Virginia, Courtney and Marc, and Doug and Mary.
Members indicated they had read minutes, which had been distributed via email. Bev moved approval; Bob seconded the motion and minutes were approved.
Treasurer Bob distributed a report indicating the club has a balance of $361.23 in its account. There has been no activity in the account since the previous meeting. Bob said there are plans to move the account to a more convenient bank.
He announced that dues of $10 per person will be collected at the meeting.
Old Business
Schedule Doug reviewed the club’s schedule for the remainder of the year:
May 19, home of Carole and Gordon, annual fundraising mini-auction and raffle; each member is to bring at least one item for the auction; the Olsen’s will provide a raffle item and Bob will once again prepare raffle tickets.
Aug. 12, home of Bob and Bev, plans for Percy and Vivian Moore dinner will be finalized in lieu of a program.
Oct. 14, home of Doug and Mary, Mary will present a program.
New Business
Annual HCA Convention The theme for the convention is Under the Sea.
Members attending the convention will be Bob, Bev and Mary. Courtney and Marc have not yet decided, but hope to attend.
Mary is a candidate for the HCA board; voting will occur at the convention.
At this time, Bev has decided not to do a table display for the convention. Mary is considering the possibility of doing one, using lots of blue and green to fit the theme.
Bob made a motion that funds available in the treasury today and proceeds of the May mini-auction and raffle be used to offset anticipated expenses of the Percy and Vivian Moore dinner instead of being donated to the HCA at the convention as useful. Virginia seconded; motion was approved.
Bev reported that in December the club received a letter thanking the club for donating a Pinwheel and Fan jug with Minnesota food items for the silent auction at convention.
Percy and Vivian Moore Weekend (PVMW) Sept 21 and 22 We discussed plans made thus far for HCA’s annual fundraising dinner that our club is hosting Sept. 21 and 22.
Bev reported that arrangements have been made with the Hampton Inn Bloomington for a block of rooms at a special rate for out-of-town attendees. The price will be $104 per night at the Hampton for a room with king-sized bed. Gregg Cameron has already put a link for hotel reservations on the HCA website.
Friday: There will be an open house/registration at Bob and Bev’s house, 1 to 4 p.m., to give attendees the opportunity to pick up their welcome bags/schedules and see the Heise’s Heisey collection.
The welcome dinner will be Friday evening at The Centennial Lakes Hughes Pavilion in Edina, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. happy hour, dinner at 7 p.m. The silent auction will be open for bidding during happy hour.
There will also be a Road Finds competition/fundraiser. People bring pieces of Heisey that they found on their road trips to Minnesota. People vote for the best road find with $1 bills. Bev will provide a traveling trophy for the winner.
The fee for the room is $1,000; it was paid by Bob and Bev to reserve the room. Because this venue is part of a City of Edina public park, there will be a $10 per person fee for bar that includes wine, beer and soda. The caterer’s menu includes boneless chicken breasts with mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, fruit plate, mini-croissants. There will also be a vegetarian entrée.
The caterer will provide two helpers for $120. The cost of the meal will be $13 per person. We will rent tablecloths from the caterer for $2 each. Food will be served on heavy disposable plastic plates with silver rims that Bev has purchased. We will rent cups, saucers and silverware.

Saturday: Bob and Bev will host a meeting of the Great Plains club that afternoon (There will also be a HCA board meeting sometime during the weekend, either Friday or Saturday at the Hampton Inn Bloomington).
There will be a reception at the Olson’s house with wine, beer, non-alcoholic punch and appetizers from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The dinner, live auction and program will be at the Commodore Hotel in St. Paul. The room fee is $600; it was paid by Doug and Mary to reserve the room.
The happy hour and review of live auction items will begin at 6 p.m., dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The dinner options have not yet been finalized.
The program will include a brief annual meeting with the HCA president, the live auction, and Heisey Tales from the Northwoods - a media presentation that will be put together by Courtney and Mary.
Live and Silent Auctions for PVMW Northwoods members are asked to donate an item for the silent or live auction with an estimated value of $100 or more. Bev has spoken with Jack Burriss, curator of the Heisey museum, who agreed to look for some special Heisey glass from the museum’s inventory of sale glass to put in the live auction or a raffle box. Some members have also talked with Heisey dealer Kim Carlisle about purchasing items from him to donate to the auction. Bev said a member of the Great Plains club who makes jam to sell at their meetings has agreed to donate jam for the event.
PVMW theme After a brief discussion, Heisey in the Northwoods was selected as the theme for the event. This will be used on posters, flyers and all other printed material for the event. Courtney has agreed to design all necessary items and post PVMW information on the Northwoods website.
Suggested tourist sites The club reviewed a summary of recommended tourist sites that Mary put together to entice people to come to Minnesota for the event. Members suggested several additions. These will be distributed to everyone who attends the HCA Convention.
Bob moved to adjourn the meeting at 2:20 p.m. Chuck seconded the motion and it passed.
Show and Tell
Chuck shared a Trident floral bowl in Moongleam. Bob shared a Sussex #419 3 oz. cordial. Bev shared luncheon goblet in New Era #4044 with an etching of the famous Diamond H logo. Doug shared a Winged Scroll pitcher and tumbler in Moongleam.
Program Mary presented a program on Heisey’s popular Orchid Etching, which was introduced in 1940. The etching, which features orchid flowers alternating with bows within a framework of vines and small flowers, gained almost immediate popular acclaim and remained in production until the company ceased operation in 1957 – and beyond. Neila Bredehoft, author of books and articles on Heisey glass, described Orchid Etching as the most popular etching the Heisey Company ever produced. It also became the most extensive pattern Heisey produced, appearing on almost 50 different patterns with over 225 different pieces, according to Walter Ludwig, former curator of the National Heisey Glass Museum.
